On the obverse of the coin, Great Britain Gold Sovereign is an effigy of Queen Elizabeth II. Her Majesty has featured on the Gold Sovereign since 1952 and this is the fifth-generation portrait of the Queen to be used in the series. The portrait shows the Queen aged 89 with the George IV State Diadem Crown.

The reverse side of  Great Britain Gold Sovereign coins includes a depiction of St. George on horseback as he slays a dragon. There are various versions of stories about a Christian warrior on a horse slaying a serpent-like beast that dates back to the late Roman era and the early 5^th century. In this design, a muscular St. George rides in on horseback with a Corinthian helmet on his head and a sword in his right hand as he rides down the dragon before slaying the beast with his sword.

First introduced in 1967, the Krugerrand has become the most recognized and widely owned gold bullion coin in the world. 1980 krugerrand gold coin mark the year these coins dominated over 90% of the global gold market. Considering the coin's intended use as currency in South Africa, they are made from a durable alloy of gold and copper, also known as crown gold. 

The obverse of the african gold coin features a profile of Paul Kruger aka Uncle Paul who was the last President of the South African Republic from 1883 to 1900. The reverse of the Coin highlights a Springbok antelope, one of South Africa’s native fauna symbols, and has inscriptions stating the name of the coin and gold content.
